This old ash tree, with its branches and bark characterised by weird and wonderful shapes, could be straight from a children’s story book.

It has been nominated as our Tree of the Week by local resident Jeannie Caunce, who admires it every day on her fields walk between Skipton Road and Tar Topping.

“There are three gnarled ash trees in this stretch of hedgerow,” says Jeannie. “They are quite magical… the very definition of gnarled, nobbly, rough and twisted, and of age.”

Because the ash is a traditional tree of British woodlands, it is quite possible that these special trees are remnants of an ancient woodland but have since been incorporated into a field boundary.
