To relaunch our Tree of the Week feature, which will appear during spring and summer, we just have to choose the hawthorn which is right now at the peak of its blossomy beauty!
Hawthorn trees and hedges are a constant source of delight around Silsden, just as they have been for centuries.
But they have a practical use too. Many of our oldest hawthorn hedges were first planted as field boundaries, chosen because the prickliness of their leaves deter livestock from straying. This also means that the hawthorn offers a natural protection for the birds and small wildlife which seek shelter within.
